Korean Air: Why go to One London Airport when you can go to Two?

07/10/2011 by Kevincm

Korean Air has confirmed it is to begin services to London Gatwick as well as London Heathrow. The route will operate between Seoul Inchon and London Gatwick 3 times a week.

Korean Air will continue to serve London Heathrow <> Seoul Inchon too.

The market demand between London and Seoul seems to be increasing with Asiana ramping up to a 5 times a week service, and now the extra 3 planes a week heading to London Gatwick – an airport that has been missing some long haul capacity for some time.

I think we can all guess why the service isn’t going to Heathrow – and it’s probably down to 1) slots and 2) parking a plane for that long at LHR?

And the timings for this service aren’t exactly hot. Whilst Gatwick is sort of close to New Malden (where there is a substantial Korean community), Heathrow is closer. Also getting to wherever you want to go in the United Kingdom at 22:50 at night isn’t my exact idea of fun on public transport.

It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out and if the route is sustainable….
