A few weeks ago I wrote about some of the free transfer options you can use in the Heathrow Area. There’s one I mentioned raised an eyebrow… free transfers using the Underground?

Yes – It’s possible as this video from Londonist proves:
Let’s get onto the sticky bits:
- You will need an Oyster Card or Contactless Payment card. Cash payments will result in a fare being charged!
- It’s free between Heathrow Terminal 5, Terminal 4, Terminal 2 and 3.
- You can change at Hatton Cross, but you cannot exit the station if you don’t want to be charged (on the plus side, it’s Hatton Cross… not exactly the most scenic part of London).
- If you go outside the Heathrow area and tap out, you will be charged the appropriate fare.
Again – check the Heathrow Free Travel Zone map to help you out.
When might you use the Underground to change terminal? It depends – Heathrow Express operates at 15-minute intervals. It sometimes may be quicker to dive down to the Underground, and change terminal using the Underground.
Just be aware if traveling with luggage or with a buggy, the Heathrow Express may be a lot more accessible option if transiting the Heathrow Terminals.
It’s good to have many options – even at places like Heathrow Airport. This is another option to keep in mind if you can’t transit airside at Heathrow.
