It seems Air Canada is planning some very long haul routes, with the planned introduction of a Vancouver to Melbourne Tullamarine.

The new service is seasonal, and has limited operations between 1st December 2017 and 4th February 2018.
Operations are detailed below:
AC037 DEPART YVR 22:45 ARRIVE MEL 09:45+2 Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays AC038 DEPART MEL 11:40 ARRIVE YVR 07:30 Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays Commences 1st December 2017 from Vancouver through 4th February 2018 Booked Equipment: Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner Operates from Vancouver on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays Operates from Melbourne on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays Data: Air Canada/Routes Online
Air Canada operates regular services to Sydney and Brisbane, with the Melbourne previously operated with a stopover in Honolulu in both directions.
It’s an interesting announcement, with the timings coinciding with the Canadian winter/Australian summer.
The limited seasonal operation could be seen as disappointing for those seeking direct services – but it could be a trial to see if the service has enough demand to be sustainable in the long-term.
For Air Canada, it’s part of an interesting expansion that mainly focuses on Rouge services. Seeing more Air Canada mainline services is welcome.
