Airbus revealed its updates on the A220 at APEX Expo , and brought along its cabin mock-up for the A220.
Those of you wish long memories might remember this cabin demonstrator from before… that’s right. It’s the one that was used by Bombardier when they came to AIX in 2017 for its CSeries Demonstration.
But there are things to talk about. So let’s kick off with the seats. In the Cabin supplied version, Zodiac Aerospace will be supplying seats. At some intresting widths.
We know the basic layout is a 3-2 layout, but it was confirmed that the layout allows for 18.5″ seat width in the windows and aliases, with 19.5″ in the middle seat (pretty much making the middle seat… desirable).
Buyer furnished options exist from Rockwell Collins and ZIM (deployed on Swiss).
The overhead bins are pivot bins by their style, and are capable of swallowing up roll-aboard cases with ease, with up to 5 suitcases when fitted on the side, with wheels inward, or three across if you’re being greedy with space
As for the screens… these are interesting. They’re Panasonic Aviation Systems screen, and can be used for multiple purposes -be it IFE, moving map or even safety demonstration.
As Airbus push forward the A220, there are chances more of the design language will change. Certainly there’s still a lot of Bombardier in it (and the main interiors are provided by Zodiac Aerospace), but there are Airspace elements there in terms of passenger space, storage and lighting.
As more A220s head into traffic (and with the orders of JetBlue, Air Canada and Delta to come… and Moxy too), there’s still a lot of room for innovation in the cabin.
And if it gives us the passenger more space or more comfort – this can only be a good thing.
