KLM firms up order for Embraer E195-E2 aircraft

13/11/2019 by Kevincm

KLM is firmed up a letter of intent with Embraer, and converting it into a firm order for 21 E195-E2 aircraft (the largest type Embraer manufacture), with 14 additional purchase rights.

Originally, the Letter of Intent called for 15 firm and 20 purchase rights – so it seems KLM were convinced to obtain more aircraft.

The new aircraft will be leased to KLM by Aircastle and ICBC Aviation Leasing – each providing KLM with 11 and 10 E195-E2s, respectively.

In terms of configuration, the airline will have their new E195-E2’s configured in a 132 seater configuration, with deliveries set to commence during the first quarter of 2021.

John Slattery, President and CEO, Embraer Commercial Aviation said

“KLM’s decision to add a further six aircraft to this order is a significant vote of confidence in our E2 programme”,

“Delivering 30% lower emissions when compared to KLM’s current E190s, yet still providing a further 32 seats, the E195-E2 will simultaneously increase capacity for KLM at slot constrained Schiphol Airport, while also delivering huge reductions in emissions.”

KLM President & CEO Pieter Elbers, said

“For KLM this aircraft is a significant part of our commitment to improving our environmental impact. Not only is the E195-E2 the most fuel efficient lowest emission aircraft in its class, it is also the quietest by a considerable margin – a huge benefit for both our communities and our passengers.”

Growing out the Cityhopper fleet

KLM Cityhopper (who operate the Embraer fleet), is currently runs a a mixture of E175 and E190 aircraft. With 21 new aircraft joining the fleet, and the airline wanting to maximise slot capacity, there may be some flex in the fleet movement.

Certainly – these aircraft will be targeted at trunk routes, where bums on seats matter – and yet struggle to justify a larger Boeing 737 operating.

But considering the Boeing 737-700 that KLM currently operates also have 132 seats (the same number as the incoming aircraft), it’s an interesting shift coming ahead.
