With the partnership with Tesco being dissolved, Avios have chosen a new UK earning partner – Nectar.
The new earning process goes live on the 25th of January 2021.
From that date. you can convert Nectar balances into Avios. It’s not going to be cheap – with 400 Nectar points to 250 Avios.
When you convert to Avios, you can convert those use with British Airways Executive Club, which can be put towards flights with British Airways, as well as upgrades, hotel stays, car hire and more.
The conversion works both ways and customers who wish to receive more Nectar points can convert 250 Avios into 400 Nectar points.
Customers can convert Nectar points into Avios, and vice versa, from 25 January 2021. To convert points, customers can link their Nectar and British Airways Executive Club accounts. Customers who are not existing British Airways Executive Club or Nectar members can join either club for free. Customers can link their accounts by visiting either the Nectar website or British Airways Executive Club website
If you convert a minimum of 1,600 Nectar points by 14 February will be rewarded with a bonus 500 Avios. You will also be rewarded with 2x Nectar points at Sainsbury’s until 19 April 2021.
How can I earn Nectar Points?
Earning Nectar points is a little different to Tesco Clubcard – as you can earn in multiple places. These include:
- Sainsbury’s (In-Store and fuel station – Nectar Owner)
- Argos
- American Express
- eBay UK
- Esso Fuels (Petrol and Diesel)
- Expedia (fill the field in when you book)
- Next (Fashion Retailer)
- Now TV (on-demand streaming service)
- Sky Mobile (Mobile Phone Service)
- Vodafone (Moblie Phone Service/Home Broadband)
You can also earn and spend at other places too.
Head for Points covers a lot more of the mathematics at their posts here and here.
Whilst the headline rate of conversion is awful (400 Nectar to 250 Avios), I’ve seen more than my fair share of eBay promotions to boost my Nectar Balances (as well as the customised method of earning Nectar at Sainbury’s that I never got the hang of), that should make earning Avios via Nectar easier.

James Moir, Managing Director at Nectar, said:
“Partnering with British Airways allows us to provide another exciting way to reward our Nectar customers. Although the past year has been uncertain, it’s important to have something to look forward to. We are delighted to offer customers the chance to turn their points into some incredible future travel experiences via Avios and for the first time, Avios can be turned into Nectar points so customers can make the most out of their everyday spending.”
Carolina Martinoli, British Airways’ Director of Brand and Customer Experience, said:
“Today’s announcement will give our loyal Executive Club Members even more ways to collect and spend Avios and we are excited about the opportunities this new partnership will bring. Everyday spending can quickly become a flight, upgrade or hotel stay giving members of Nectar and the Executive Club something to look forward to after a difficult last year.”
Adam Daniels, CEO of Avios, said:
“Like Nectar, we pride ourselves on working with a wide range of partners for the benefit of our members, so working together was a natural step. Nectar will join hundreds of partners who all offer a whole host of exciting and varied ways to collect and spend Avios.”
A new partnership – with a few new options
Well, it didn’t take too long for Avios to announce their new “supermarket” partner – and for those near a Sainsburys, it should help bring a constant flow of Avios in.
More interesting to me is the ability to earn off eBay (those 5x/6x/10x bonuses will become a lot more important in the future).
However, the possibility of turning Avios into Nectar points could be worth it for some Nectar redemptions.
This – has a lot of room to play out in and become very interesting fast.
