British Airways plots a busy transatlantic summer

06/06/2022 by Kevincm

With the London Heathrow – Portland route launched last week, British Airways is planning a very busy summer across the Atlantic.

The airline will serve 26 US cities to London, with various city pairs making a reappearance for the season and beyond.

Firstly is the Pittsburg to Heathrow service, with the airline operating four times a week from the Pennsylvanian city to London. The route operates on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. The service relaunched on the 1st of June.

For those who prefer daytime transatlantic flights, the airline is launching a new flight from Newark Liberty International Airport to London Heathrow on 6th June  – its third daily flight from Newark to London, departing at 07:55 in the morning.  With American Airlines, they will operate 15 flights a day between London and New York, with 11 between JFK to Heathrow, three from Newark to London and a single JFK to Gatwick flight.

San Jose, California to London Heathrow will relaunch on the 13th of June, with them offering a daily service.

Finally, for lovers of the Airbus A380, there’s good news with the A380 returning to Chicago O’Hare and Vancouver, with Dallas-Fort Worth in the pipeline for the 1st of July.

Neil Chernoff, British Airways’ Director of Networks and Alliances said: “

This summer British Airways will be flying from 26 US cities to London and we’re very excited to be adding Portland to our list of transatlantic destinations. Not only are we the only airline to offer direct flights from Portland to London, but this new route also opens a wide variety of connections for our customers. Through Alaska Airlines, our oneworld partner, British Airways will offer codeshare connections to several destinations operated by Alaska Airlines from Portland.”

The Big Transatlantic Bet

Whilst some markets are constrained by immigration limitations or are just starting to open up, it seems that there is still money to be made on the transatlantic operations as airlines continue to recover after the past two years.

With competitors, making similar bets – as well as new airlines starting up to exploit the perceived gap in the market, airlines are going to have to fight for market share, whilst keeping an eye on the fuel prices, its going to be interesting to see if the airlines are fighting for market share, profit or something in between.

Is there any way to tell which routes BA is using the A380 on?
