We’ve talked here about the move to Air+Rail Links – and how it helps bridge the gap to getting to your destination – but it lacks in one way – the “Last Mile” to your final destination, be it a hotel, your home, a business meeting… and so on.
Lufthansa is expanding its Express Rail programme, so tickets will now be valid for local public transportation.
Bookings with Lufthansa Express Rail now include the Deutsche Bahn (DB) City-Ticket. This allows customers to also use local public transportation during their trip. Lufthansa boarding passes are also valid for travel by bus, tram, underground and suburban railway to and from the Express Rail station.
All Lufthansa Express Rail destinations except Siegburg and Basel will receive the upgrade.
In 26 German cities, passengers will be able to use local public transportation before and after their trip. The City-Ticket is valid on the day of validity once in each direction for the trip to the Express Rail station or from there to the destination of the trip.
A growing demand
Demand for Lufthansa Express Rail has risen continuously in recent years. According to the airline, in 2024, around 500,000 passengers used the service for their arrival and departure at Frankfurt Airport.
With the integration of the City-Ticket, Lufthansa and DB are enhancing their intermodal offering.
From Frankfurt, it is possible to access 28 cities, with DB and Lufthansa offering more than 240 ICE connections with a Lufthansa flight number (codeshare numbers).
Filling in the Last Mile Gap
As we seek to reduce our footprints – as well as familiarise ourselves with cities, using public transportation is one way of getting to your final destination, filling the last mile (or so) gap between your major transit modes (be it rail, air, etc), can be a challenge.
Although with a transit map, combined with your favourite mapping application, it becomes a lot easier to manage.
Not having to worry about change, an app, or a payment method to continue your final mile of the journey could reduce further barriers to choosing a local tram, bus or train, rather than jump in a taxi and cry at the cost…
