Yes, an actual on topic post at GhettoIFE where we talk about … IFE (In-Flight Entertainment)
Singapore Airlines will be début Panasonic’s new IFE system – the EX3 on-board its aircraft.
Now EX2 is a great system (it’s installed in various aircraft – from United’s 767-300ER’s to Singapore Airlines A330’s to ANA’s new 787), but the march of progress is a strong one.
Panasonic will supply EX3 systems for 15 Airbus A330-300’s, 8 Boeing 777-300ER’s – all to be derived during 2013. 20 of Singapore Airlines A350 fleet will also be fitted with this new IFE system.
Singapore Airlines have not stated exactly what their new system will deliver apart from “books and magazines, social media functions”, but a look at the Panasonic Web site gives an indication what to expect
- The system itself is built on Android
- A “High Speed” Broadband Internet Connectivity System delivered to the seat
- Possible Live TV
- Possible Mobile Services
- HD Display/3D capable displays
- Touch Screen interfaces
- A built in commerce system for on-plane shopping.
Singapore Airlines will be enhacing its exisit systems with further programming, games and are examining further hardware upgrades.
As long as Singapore Airlines considers the content too – they could be onto a winner. Whilst an IFE system can be technically brilliant – if there is no content, it’s just added weight on a plane…
