Finnair has joined the party when it comes to unbundling their fares, with the introduction of Light Fares.
So here we go again, with another airline unbundling its offering its luggage away. Light fares are live between Finland, within Finland, Scandinavia and the Baltic’s currently.
Light fares will go live on the 5th May for all Finnair destinations between Finland, Europe and the Middle East on Finnair and Flybe coded services.
Light Fares will offer seat reservations, standard in flight services and carry on luggage. The only thing it won’t offer is checked baggage, which can be brought at any time up to 2 hours before departure.
Light fares offer between 25% and 50% of Finnair Plus points (you will need to check with your own mileage programme how much these fares earn in your own oneworld programme)
The baggage fees are €15 if purchased in advanced, €30 if brought at the airport:
If you’re one of the following you don’t pay this:
- Finnair Plus Silver, Gold and Platinum members
- oneworld Emerald and Sapphire
These elites will get one bag free, up to 23kg.
Light fares can be combined with other fares if needed – for example, a light fare on the way out and a value fare with luggage built in.
Whilst unbundling does offer the consumer more choice in what they need, it does actually allow the passenger to break down a fare and see what components are worth to an airline.
And there is another interesting point – Finnair allows elites to check a bag in…. unlike British Airways who don’t offer this to their elites (or seat assignments… or anything).

As usual, plan appropriately and book the right ticket for your needs.
